Reading Syllabus: Week of January 5
FREAK THE MIGHTY
Important Information:
• We are beginning a Student Choice Novel Study this week. Students were given a choice of four different novels varying in genre, writing style, and ability level. The students who selected Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick will be in my 8th period reading class until the end of January. During this unit we will study vocabulary, characterization, theme, writing approach, and real world connections. Students will be expected to take quick comprehension and vocabulary quizzes throughout the unit. Then students will complete a culminating characterization project to show their knowledge of Freak the Mighty.
• All students will need a quart size Ziploc bag by Thursday, January 8 to keep their novel in.
• Students must not read ahead during this novel study; students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of differentiated activities throughout the novel (these opportunities will be announced on the syllabus each week- see Tuesday’s homework for an example).
